From the moment you arrive at Mistere, you’ll be struck by the beauty in the silence. Hear nothing but birdcalls and your own footfalls as you explore the walking trails that wend their way throughout the 50-hectare property. Stumble across native fauna – from exotic parrots to mountain brushtail possums – going about their daily business, then be soothed by the gentle sounds of natural watercourses and waterfalls. All just a half-hour drive from Gold Coast international airport, and less than 10 minutes from the shops and restaurants of Murwillumbah (pop. 8500).

secluded luxury

Three one-bedroom cottages tucked discretely into this bush paradise offer everything you’d expect from five-star accommodation. Stylishly decorated using a neutral colour palette borrowing from the hinterland surrounds, each has a spacious kitchenette/dining area that in seconds can be transformed into an al fresco deck. There is a chic open-plan bedroom/living area with 50-inch flat-screen TV, and a full-size bathroom with an indulgent rainfall shower and double chromotherapy spa bath. Enjoy the dancing flames of a cozy wood fire in winter and the comfort of efficient air-conditioning in summer.

it’s only natural

With an abundance of wildlife on your cottage doorstep, not to mention myriad species of native flora, Mistere is a paradise for budding and professional photographers alike. Train your lens on an emerald-spotted tree frog, look to the skies for the 50 species of birds identified on the property (from imposing wedge-tail eagles to delicate blue fairy wrens), or forage in the forest for a coy echidna or an inquisitive pademelon. The photo opportunities are endless, all in the midst of towering turpentines, spectacular staghorns and an array of exotic foliage.

out and about

All the Tweed region offers is just a stone’s throw from Mistere’s tranquil seclusion. Must-sees include the Tweed Regional Gallery, with its Margaret Olley Art Centre paying homage to one of Australia’s best-loved still-life artists; the charming historic villages of Uki and Tyalgum; the beachside holiday hubs of Kingscliff and Cabarita; and the bushwalking trails of Mount Warning (Wollumbin). Byron Bay and the Crystal Castle and Shambhala Gardens at Mullumbimby are a leisurely daytrip away. On Wednesdays, stock up on the freshest local produce at the Murwillumbah Farmers’ Market.

mistere magic

A getaway to Mistere bestows relaxation, indulgence and engagement in spades. Unique features include dramatic sculptures leading visitors on an off-the-beaten-track art trail. From the brolgas dancing on the lily pond, to the life-size rhino waiting to surprise guests hiking the far reaches of the property, there are plenty of “extras”. Maria, a restored 1940s crayfish dinghy, delivers a taste of history, while the Zen garden, complete with benevolent Buddha, will instil the perfect sense of calm, and provides a beautiful wedding spot on the edge of the verdant valley below.
